6 Tips for choosing the right tiles for your bathroom renovation
February 2nd, 2012How do you choose your bathroom tiles when the choice is endless?
Here are 6 tips that will guide you through this long and somewhat confusing process:
1) Set a budget: Tiles, like most things range in price. If you know your bathroom renovation budget it is easier to stick to it as you have the option of looking at tiles that are within this range only, rather than looking at all tiles, getting your heart set on one and then no cheaper tile can live up to the look and finish of the expensive one you have seen.
2) Plan it: Know what you are looking for. Is it a floor tile, a wall tile or both? Do you want a feature wall or tile? Are you looking for a seamless look or bit of fun in your bathroom? Questions like these could keep coming and without knowing exactly what you are looking for the process of visiting showrooms and searching the internet can be very daunting and therefore taking the enjoyment out of designing your new bathroom.
3) Suitability: Before looking for tiles that are pleasing ascetically it is important you are clear on what purpose the tiles are going to be used. Are small children or elderly people going to be using these spaces that are likely to slip on anything with a gloss or shiny finish? Is it a high traffic area that will need tiles that are easy and simple to clean? Do they need to be water resistant? Knowing these details will narrow down your search, not limit your search to find a tile that works for you.
4) Style: Tiles can transform an older looking room into a modern, luxurious space or they can provide a sense of homeliness and comfort. It is common for people, when thinking about a tiled space to think cold, unwelcoming and sterile. This does not have to be the case. For a contemporary feel chose light, bold colours with shapes and graphics against a plain background. For a more natural or homely feel choose neutral and natural coloured tiles, such as darker stone.
5) Colour: Choose the style you are going for first (as above). This will guide your colour choices. Think of the other accessories such as the vanity, even your favourite coloured towel that is likely to hang in your bathroom. The colour does not have to be over powering. It can be as simple as a few feature tiles or a row of coloured tiles. Not to overbear you, but another thing to think about is the colour of the grout between the tiles. If you do not want a feature tile or pattern the coloured grout can bring a little bit of colour into your bathroom without it being overpowering. Grout is often a forgotten part of a bathroom renovation; it does not have to be only white.
6) Size: If the area you are tiling is small and you want a pattered tile it may be appropriate to go for a smaller tile. A large image in a small space makes the space feel much smaller. However, if you are not after a pattered tile in a small space a larger plain tile often gives the illusion of space, making the room feel larger.
